"Wasting words and energy in worthless ridicule distracts us from our main course of action, which must be not only to develop an AIDS vaccine, but also to love, care for, and comfort those who are dying of HIV/AIDS. A vaccine shall only prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS to those not already infected; we must also direct our concern towards those who are already HIV positive."-Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela served as the president of South Africa from 1994-1995. Mandela’s primary commitment after his retirement is the fight against AIDS. He created “46664” (named after his prison number as a reminder of the sacrifices he made) mainly as a global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention campaign. Mandela started his organization in order to give the needed education on HIV, how to prevent it and how to help those who already are HIV positive.
"AIDS is clearly a disaster, effectively wiping out the development gains of the past decades and sabotaging the future."-Nelson Mandela
Mandela has not only started his own organizaion, but he has shown the world that helping out a little bit can make a tremendous difference and encourages others to change the world for the better. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Following Mandela’s 90th birthday it was decided that every year his birthday will be celebrated as “Mandela Day”. Mandela gave 67 of his years fighting for humanity so on Mandela Day it is asked that people give 67 minutes on that day helping their community to make the world a better place. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his and Frederik William de Klerk's work on laying down the new foundations for a democratic South Africa.
